67% of our eggs are 800g or above. That won’t change much.
Because we can’t limit feed our eggs are very large compared with more intensive free range systems where feed is tightly controlled. Our regenerative method, where we move our sheds weekly to fresh pastures, results in an abundance of the hens natural diet with plenty of enzymes to start the digestion process off. This also improves the hens health as they are able to access more nutrients, and, in-turn, it results in the production of a larger egg (only 31% of our eggs are 700g). Controlled v not controlled. An intensive free range system has no down stream benefits for soil. Sure, you can control feed, and get a 700g egg size more often than not, but that approach means we are missing many of the downstream benefits of egg farming that could be having an Australia wide impact on the sustainability of farming. The downstream benefits of regenerative egg farming are immense. It protects the microbiome and organisms in our soil that are critical to all life. It also helps ensure our soils don’t become compacted and devoid of micro-organisms, which can lead, eventually, to desertification. Further, it helps eliminate fertiliser run off into our water ways as we use natural manure from the chickens (instead of industrial fertiliser) to gradually feed the microbiome on our very large multi-generational farms. Everyone who chooses to make the adjustment to accomodating a larger egg (which many customers love anyway), is part of helping regenerate thousands of acres of land and building sustainability in farming. Commercially, it can also build gross profit in your store.
